| Weapons | ||
| There's a subtle naming difference between Crono's swords and Frog's swords that doesn't translate. For Crono's swords, only terms that originated in Japanese (katana, etc.) are used. Frog's swords, on the other hand, use terms taken from English. This is probably because Crono uses Japanee-style curved single-edged blades, whereas Frog uses European-style straight double-edged swords. Crono's katanas have a 10% critical hit rate, except where noted otherwise. |

||
| Attack power +40 Used by: Crono | ||
| Attack power +50 Used by: Crono I don't think this is possible to get without cheating. Considering the attack power, it would have to come after the Soy Sauce Katana (early in Magus's Castle), but before the Ancient Sword (trade in Ioka just after Magus's Castle), which would place it somewhere in Magus's Castle, but there's no sign of it... |
||
| Attack power +70 Used by: Crono | ||
魔法生物に1・5倍撃 |
1.5 times damage on magical creatures |
1.5x hit on Mg enemies |
| Attack power +90 Used by: Crono I suspect that the kanji for this one are 斬魔刀, literally "magic-killing sword" or "demon-killing sword". The idea fits the effect. It's similar to 斬馬刀 (zanbatou), literally "horse-killing sword", an actual type of Japanese sword used to fight against cavalry. And 斬魔刀 is Youjinbou's ultimate attack in Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, by the same company. The NA version's name is similar to this meaning, though the description is a bit meh. |
||
| Attack power +110 Used by: Crono こんごう can also mean 'mixture', so I guess that's where 'alloy' came from. |
||
| Attack power +125 Used by: Crono Ten'ou is probably 天王 in kanji, though the usual reading for that is てんのう. The planet Uranus is 天王星 in Japanese, so there may be a connection. I guess the NA version name isn't too far off, considering... |
||
| Attack power +135 Used by: Crono I've had the hardest time trying to figure out what 'yasha' really means. Several dictionaries define it as a female demon or she-devil, some putting female in brackets to indicate that it's not necessarily female but generally is. Some sources refer to a mythical fearsome creature in Buddhism. Several sources on Japanese mythology say they're vampire bats thought to be reincarnated from women consumed by anger. Still others indicate a vampiress. My best guess is that the demonic meaning comes from Buddhism in general, and that the notion of angry women and bats came from mixing with Japanese culture, so than in Japan at least, it's some of all of the above. I'll have to try asking around to confirm this, but I figure the concept of 'yasha', like creatures in Westen mythology, isn't cleary defined even for natives. But it looks as though it would generally include the notions of evil, vampiric, and female. And then there's 'vedic'. 'Vedic'? I had to check that on dictionary.com. It's an adjective decribing ancient Hindu sacred texts, the variety of Sanskrit they're written in, or the culture that wrote them. And that has to do with 'yasha'... how? |
||
| Attack power +150 Used by: Crono Onimaru would probably be 鬼丸 in kanji. 鬼 is a certain type of demon generally depicted as a large muscular humanoid with horns. 丸 just means circle. Many older Japanese male given names end in 丸, so there's a good chance that it's a name, possibly referring to some swordsmith or historical figure I don't know of. 'Kali' is apparently a reference to a Hindu goddess of death. No apparent connection to the JP version name. The Onimaru has a 20% critical hit rate, unlike the 10% that most of Crono's weapons have. |
||
クリティカルの時、4倍撃 |
4x damage when a critical hit |
|
| Attack power +170 Used by: Crono One of the four mythological Chinese gods who govern the four quadrents of the sky, Suzaku (朱雀 in kanji) appears as a firebird and rules over fire and the southern sky. Shiva is fairly well known as a major Hindu deity. What's with the NA version and Hindu references? The Suzaku has a 7% critical hit rate, unlike the 10% that most of Crono's weapons have. |

| Attack power +43 Used by: Crono Soy Sauce's name was changed to Slash in the NA version, so his sword changed too. Incidentally, early printings of the manual (and maybe later ones too) call this the Fleaver, so maybe there had been plans to rename Soy Sauce as Flea instead? |
||
| With two exceptions that are duly noted, Marle's crossbows all have a 20% critical hit rate. | ||
| Attack power +3 Used by: Marle ボーガン, literally "bow gun", is a Japanese name for the crossbow, which fires by pulling a trigger, like a gun. I had guessed this to start with, but have since confimed it with a Japanese-Japanese dictionary. |

| Attack power +100 Used by: Marle | ||
| Attack power +180 Used by: Marle In Norse mythology, the Valkyries guide the souls of slain heroes to Valhalla. I think it's sad that the NA version misspells "Valkyrie"... The Valkyrie has a 40% critical hit rate, unlike the 20% that most of Marle's weapons have. |
||
時に、『ストップ』を発動 |
Occasionally inflicts "Stop" |
Random "Stop" |
| Attack power +140 Used by: Marle In Greek mythology, the Sirens were two or three (depending on the source) sea nymphs who used compellingly beautiful singing to lure sailors to their death. 'Siren' is usually spelled サイレン (SAIREN) or セイレン (SEIREN) in Japanese, with the second spelling probably used to avoid confusion with the other sort of sirens, such as those on police cars. I'm not sure why Chrono Trigger uses セイレーン (SEIREEN) instead. The Siren has a 40% critical hit rate, unlike the 20% that most of Marle's weapons have. |
||
| The four bows above all have 0 attack, 20% critical hit rate, and no character can equip them. They were probably reserved during development as space for any additional bows added, and then never used. The Siren's out-of-order attack power suggests it may have taken what was once one of these slots. | ||

| Attack power +15 Used by: Lucca | ||
| Attack power +20 Used by: Lucca This weapon doesn't seems to be obtainable without cheating. | Attack power +250 Used by: Lucca The damage this weapon inflicts fluctuates wildly, and can be any of 10%, 50%, 100%, 200%, or 300% of the damage it should be. The Miracle Shot has a 40% critical hit rate, unlike the 20% that most of Lucca's weapons have. |
||
時に、敵のHPを1/2 |
Occasionally halves enemy's HP |
Cuts enemy's HP by 1/2 |
| Attack power +60 Used by: Lucca This is another weapon that probably can't be found without cheating. It will often take off exactly 1/2 of the target's remaining HP (rounded down) instead of calculating damage normally. Bosses (and possibly some other enemies) always take the normal damage and not the special effect. 'Gravity' is, of course, not the same as 'Graedus'. | ||
| The four guns above all have 0 attack, and no character can equip them. They were probably reserved during development as space for any additional guns added, and then never used. The Gravity's out-of-order attack power suggests that it took what was once one of these slots, even though it isn't actually used. | ||
| With one exception, all of Robo's arms have a 10% critical hit rate. | ||
| Attack power +20 Used by: Robo ブリキ (BURIKI) is a cheap tin-plated iron used in building and tin cans. I can only assume that's what this refers to. |

自分のHP下1けたで攻撃力が可変 |
Attack power changes with ones digit of own HP |
Attack changes below 10 HP |
| Attack power +1 Used by: Robo Yes, the attack power is horrible, but the damage is multiplied by the ones digit of Robo's current HP, divided by 2. So, it does no damage when the ones digit is 0, 50% what it ought to when 1, 100% when 2, 150% when 3, 200% when 4, and so on, all the way up to 450% of the expected value when it's 9. Keep that ones digit high and it more than makes up for the low attack power... The NA version's description is off. It looks like they confused "one's digit" with "single digits". The Crisis Arm has a 5% critical hit rate, unlike the 10% that most of Robo's weapons have. |
||
| This arm has 0 attack, and no character can equip it. It was probably reserved during development as space for any additional arms added, and then never used. The Crisis Arm appears to be a late addition that took what once was one of these slots. | ||
| All of Frog's swords have a 23% critical hit rate (not the 10% that most melee weapons have), and the Grandleon gets an even higher rate when equipped together with the Hero Badge. | ||
| Attack power +6 Used by: Frog | ||
| Attack power +10 Used by: Frog | ||
| Attack power +75 Used by: Frog This is the Grandleon as Frog starts using it before Magus's Castle. 'Masamune' just comes out of nowhere in the NA version. Yes, he was a famous swordsmith, and there are swords named after him in other games, but this simply isn't one of them. |
||
| Attack power +90 Used by: Frog | ||
魔法生物に1・5倍撃 |
1.5 times damage on magical creatures |

まりょく +4 |
Magic power +4 |
Magic +4 |
| Attack power +120 Used by: Frog | ||
2x hit for Mg enemies |
||
| Attack power +135 Used by: Frog The NA version claims double damage against magic enemies for the Brave Sword. It's lying. Want proof? Try using it on a magic enemy and comparing it to weapons with the bonus (like the Demon Killer) and weapons without it (like the Rune Blade). Magic enemies include the Jugglers in Magus's castle, the Nu in the Hunting Forest, and most of the monsters in the Ocear Floor Palace. |
||
2x hit for Mg enemies |
||
| Attack power +200 Used by: Frog This is the Grandleon after it powers up in Cyrus's tomb. Like the Brave Sword, the NA version claims that this sword inflicts double damage on magic enemies. It doesn't, but it hardly matters. Once you get this sword, probably the only magic enemies you can still fight are the Edgers in the Underground Waterway and the Nu in the Hunting Forest. Try it out on them, as compared to, for example, the Demon Killer. |
||
魔法生物に2倍撃 |
2 times damage on magical creatures |
2x hit for Mg enemies. |
| Attack power +120 Used by: Frog | ||
| ごうけん (gouken) is probably 剛拳 in kanji. It's a martial arts term; 剛 means 'strong', 'firm', or 'sturdy', and 拳 means 'fist'. In any case, it's not bronze. Bronze in kanji is 青銅 (seidou), and bronze fist would probably be 銅拳 (douken). All five of these weapons have 0 attack and only Ayla can equip them. Ayla's weapon changes automatically as her level increases. So what's the difference? Plenty. The Iron Fist randomly causes confusion in the target enemy, and when the Strong Fist gets a critical hit, the damage is 9999 (the maximum possible) regardless of enemy defense. The first Fist has 20% critical, the second has 25% critical, the third has 30% critical, the Iron Fist has 35% critical, and the Strong Fist has only 10% critical to compensate for its awesome power. Ayla starts with the first Fist equipped, and I've heard that she advances to the next one the first battle after reaching level 24, and again after 48, 72, and 96. I haven't tested the levels, but they sound right. |
||
| The two fists above have 0 attack, and no character can equip them. They were probably reserved during development as space for any additional fists added, and then never used. | ||
| All of Magus's scythes have a 10% critical hit rate. | ||
| Attack power +120 Used by: Magus | ||
| Attack power +135 Used by: Magus ハーケン (HAAKEN) is derived from German and refers to the very sharp tools used in rock and ice climbing that are stabbed into the surface being climbed to create a handhold. It looks like ハーケン was mistaken for ハリケーン (HARIKEEN) in translation for the NA version, though I'll admit I made the same mistake until finding out about the ice pick meaning. |
||
| Attack power +150 Used by: Magus めいおう (meiou) would probably be 冥王 in kanji. 冥王星 (meiousei) is the planet Pluto. Coincidence? Probably not. The connection with Pluto may be where the NA version name came from. |
||
仲間が倒れると攻撃力アップ |
Attack power up whenever companions fall |
Attack up when ally falls |
| Attack power +160 Used by: Magus Attack power is doubled when one companion is down and tripled when both are. And who came up with "Doom Sickle"? I realize there's limit to how long item names could be, but why not use 'gloom' like they did for the armor and helmet and make it something like "Gloom Edge"? |
||
| Attack power +1 Used by: Crono Doesn't seem to do anything interesting. Probably just a joke item. Stolen from a Nu. |
||
| The Broken Sword and its hilt are the pieces of the Grandleon. Bosch can repair it with Dreamstone. Both pieces have 0 attack and are unsuable. | ||
| This is the Grandleon before Frog claims it to open the way the Magus's Castle. It can't be equipped and has 0 attack. 'Masamune' again... Oh well, at least they're consistent. |

| A lot of these have メット (METTO) in the name. It's the 'met' from 'helmet' and is used much like 'helm' in English, so I'm translating it as 'helm'. | ||

『こんらん』防止 |
Prevents "Confusion" |
Prevents "Chaos" |
| Defense power +30 Used by: Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Frog, Ayla, Magus This doesn't translate well. まどわず (madowazu) is the verb 惑う (madou), to be puzzled, in an archaic negative form. So it basically means "not being puzzled". That's then used to describe a hat to get the full name of the item. It's cleaner to say something like "Clarity Hat", but not quite as accurate, since the original emphasizes what's being prevented. Even "Calm Hat" is pretty close, and that's short enough to fit in the NA version. |

| Defense power +30 Used by: Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Frog, Ayla, Magus This doesn't translate well. わすれず (wasurezu) is the verb 忘れる (wasureru), to forget, in an archaic negative form. So it basically means "not forgetting". That's then used to describe a hat to get the full name. "Memory Cap" is a pretty good way to handle it, but it loses the emphasis the original has on what's being prevented. |

??? |
| Defense power +45 Used by: Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Frog, Ayla, Magus Avoid. Sure, the defense power is high, but the character wearing it will start all battles confused and steadily lose HP as combat continues. That's what the question marks are hinting at. パンツ (PANTSU) is derived from 'pants', but it usually refers to underpants. No wonder they have such a foul effect! Vinegar's name was changed to Ozzie in the NA version, which is why the name is different. |

Turns Exp. into G |
| Used by: Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Frog, Ayla, Magus The Mitsui Echigoya is a large and prosperous merchant group in Japan, dating back to the dry goods store Echigoya, which was established in 1673. When any character in the active party wears Echigoya's Wallet, the party gains 0 experience points, but the money won is increased by the amount the experience would have been. A monster that gives 15 exp and 10G normally will give 0exp and 25G when someone wears the wallet. This is ridiculously useful if you're attempting a low-level game. |
